Transforming Mowrey Elementary Library into a Thriving Learning Hub
Libraries are no longer just repositories for books; they are vibrant, interactive hubs where students can explore, collaborate, and engage.
This was the vision Jennifer Smith, librarian at Mowrey Elementary School in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, had when she embarked on a mission to revamp the school’s Library Media Center.
With nearly 600 students passing through the doors weekly, Smith wanted to create a welcoming, dynamic environment that would foster creativity, critical thinking, and engagement.
She entered the KI Classroom Furniture Giveaway and designed a space where students could feel inspired and empowered. With KI furniture solutions, this vision became a reality, transforming the space into a joyful and innovative center for learning.
A Space for All Students
Recognizing a library needs to serve students of all ages, Smith focused on having tables that adapt to different age groups and learning styles.
Ruckus activity tables in height-adjustable and fixed-height models were introduced to create tiered workspaces. Paired with Intellect Wave chairs and Ricochet stools, these solutions provide flexibility allowing younger students to work at floor level – a position that feels natural and comfortable to them. Older students can use the higher tables to engage in collaborative projects, STEM activities, or digital learning.
“I wanted a dynamic learning environment for my kids so they could be more comfortable,” Smith said.
Comfort encourages critical thinking and creates a positive, motivational environment, she added.
My Place ottomans and C-Table personal worksurfaces provide added workspaces and give students the freedom to choose how they want to engage with their lessons. This freedom leads to more individualized learning experiences.
Creating Spaces for Imagination and Movement
Smith’s design introduced multiple learning zones in the library space, each designed to cater to different activities and age groups.
For younger students, Imaginasium blocks and blips were added to inspire imaginative play. These modular blocks encourage creativity by allowing students to build, construct, and experiment with different shapes and forms.
For Smith, this playful space fosters cognitive development, enabling students to engage in problem-solving, spatial awareness, and collaboration. Additionally, it’s multipurpose in nature.
The space caters to students using the library for autism support activities and provides a soft, safe environment where they can climb, crawl, and balance.
These activities help improve fine motor skills and sensory integration, all while ensuring students feel comfortable and secure in their movements. By offering a stimulating yet calming environment, the library has become a haven for children with different learning and physical needs.
Comfort Meets Functionality
Another vital component of the library transformation was the addition of Sonrisa lounge furniture, which transformed a corner of the library into a comfortable, welcoming nook for students who want to read or relax.
Sonrisa provides a space where students can retreat to unwind or immerse themselves in a book, and the lean-back rollers allow students themselves to easily reposition the chairs for group reading or solo relaxation.
This adaptability adds flexibility and an element of fun to the space.
"The new chairs make it so much more fun to read,” said Ruby, a student at Mowrey Elementary School.
With furniture that promotes both relaxation and engagement, the library has become a place where students feel at home, and where learning comes to life.
