What is Office Furniture’s Role When it Comes to Climate Impact?

Office furniture plays a significant role in climate impact, with Americans discarding 12.1 million tons of furniture in 2018 alone, nearly 80 percent of which ended up in landfills. Renovations within buildings, including changing furniture, account for about half of a building's embodied carbon emissions over its lifetime. Of this, nearly 25 percent is attributable to furniture.

Research suggests that addressing furniture's role in emissions presents a substantial opportunity to lower the carbon footprint of building interiors. In this podcast, KI experts Jason Lazarz and Angela Allen engage with Avi Rajagopal of Metropolis to discuss strategies for tackling this challenge and how designers are redefining norms for manufacturers.
